So what SHOULD the monk look like?

[:1]I'm not going to go too deeply into the discussion of Inferno armor styles as a whole, since that discussion has taken place elsewhere on these forums and doesn't need to be rehashed. What I would like to discuss with my fellow monk fans is what kind of end game style you would like to see the monk class adopt.

So we know that armor looks different on different classes (and possibly different genders); ie., chain armor would look different on a barb then it does on a monk. So in effect we know Blizzard has a certain style in mind with each class. In looking at the female monk concept for the end game, it appeared to me that they were going for an asian feel to the class... though in the end it felt more like WoW then asian (nothing against WoW but I prefer styles that feel more... Diablo-ish for D3?). Obviously, this is only one example of the many types of end game item combinations that may be possible, so its hard to say what different gear will do to our look, but I'm not entirely sure I wanted the monk to go the "asian martial arts" route.

Personally I feel that a better overall style choice for the monk would have been to tap more into the eastern european monk side of the class. More of the "religious warrior" look. More robes, more "holy crusader", less ninja and more Buddha or Vatican. More priest than Samurai if you will.

What do you guys think? Where would you like to see the monk go as a style choice?|||I'd say the armor looks sorta samurai-ish and asian. But that neither makes it cool or fitting for the class. The armors for specifically the monk class should easy to move around in (light but still protect well). It's as if they just don't know how to make cool (apparently called epic nowadays) armor without making it bigger and sharper and shinier.

They could have pretty darn effective yet light armor beneath robe-like clothing and tabards without losing coolness or realism.|||I get what you mean... the end game armor concept they showed seemed rather unwieldy. Even forgetting about the bulkiness of the armor, you would expect a monk to impale himself on that kind of armor. Obviously they are not going for the "realistic" look, but the armor pictured doesn't (to me) seem like the type of armor a monk in the game world would choose to wear given the choice.|||I am glad to see they are at least making the monk look "epic" and not a guy running around in a shirt and baggy pants at lvl 60. I mean you know the barb is going to look like a beast with inferno gear and the monk looking like a wiener would have been a disappointment.|||I'd have liked the armor to be less about physical substance (bigger, more things poking out ...etc) and more... Spiritual? Magical?

A lightly shimmering robe for example, adding an Eastern style halo (more on the back rather then on top of the head) and back-lit light like a Buddha statue.

Or a robe that turns you into a golden monk with the associated lighting effect.

A jet black light armor that pulses, or some void/dimensional like graphical effect. In truth this sounds more demon hunter kinda thing though.

An armor of floating cloth, though if staying true to Eastern legend it would be female only, I'd get weird-ed out if a male monk wears it.

A light leather armor with pulses of energy traveling across now and then

...etc, Armor don't have to be bigger and more parts to hang christmas decoration to look badass.

Of course, there's a problem with all the work needed for animated armor rather then just simple static skins, and not to mention the disparity of putting on plate armor only to have it look like a shimmering robe. It all sounds more like unique armor like graphics then anything... But I'm sure it's a problem that can be surmounted.|||Quote:

Exactly... I was thinking more european christian/crosses and cathedrals/Diablo 1 style, but I loved those armor ideas you had and would have been quite happy with those choices. Where is the "holy" in our holy warrior? I think a monk's style should reflect a little of that.|||In the massive inferno armor thread there were a few people that did like the monk armor. However, I don't feel that it fit the concept art (even of the more heavily armored female monk) or the background of the character, eastern European combined with Asian.

I agree with Dune in that the armor should at least look epic somehow. A simple black robe (European Monk) or orange robe (Shaolin Monk) is more "realistic" or historically accurate but would be boring.

aj2000's ideas were great! I would love to see something like that implemented. You could stay with the light armor/high movement and still look awesome this way.

Most importantly, I would like to see a variety of viable end game armor looks. I actually liked the look of an Ormus' Robes in compassion to say a Skullder's Ire. Both were viable end game armors but looked completely different. I liked it even more when rares were viable to add to the variety, but that has to do with stats and not looks.|||Quote:

Something like this'd be good.

Not sure whether to take that seriously or not. You never know on t'internet.

If not, I'd like him to at least be lithe and toned.|||Quote:

My Monk is better than yours

|||The highest gear shouldn't look like a candelabra, i can't imagine a monk like that moving fast and so on :/

It should have some shiny parts but not all over the place, something more like this in my opinion.

This looks more like an agile kick *** monk, and less like a palace guard.
