How satisfied are you with the Monk? 1-10 - Page 2

[:1]12/10

Shaolin too strong!!|||i am going to give him 8/10.

Right now from the 4 charecter i see this will be the one i start out playing.... but i am a Bow and arrow type of guy so hopefully the Range class will be just as cool. Beside his beard make him awsome just by itself, men with beards are always tough, havent any of you seen that episode on Dexter's Laboritory?|||15/10.

I freaked when I saw him in action.|||Quote:

15/10.

I freaked when I saw him in action.

LOL yeah - Kicksin's D3 successor. ^|||+10 Because the Monk knows Kung-Fu; and it is strong.

+5 Because the Monk is rocking Akuma's prayer beads from Street Fighter.

overall: 15/10|||9/10. Being a Diablo fan and an old school kung-fu flicks junkie this is the perfect combo for me. -1 since he doesn't do any tiger or crane style moves. |||Quote:

Beside his beard make him awsome just by itself, men with beards are always tough, havent any of you seen that episode on Dexter's Laboritory?

Hah, how could I forget that one?|||I just don't get what the skills are he's using.

When I think monk, I think "hand to hand melee."

The looks in the videos like he's running around spamming apocalypse from diablo1.|||Quote:

He's using martial arts, *duh*.|||It's an asssassin in different clothes and beard. He has combo moves, fast attack, and some moves that look they are just an improved assassin. Still, I was hoping, for something more comlex and diablo. My vote 1/10. The theme is wrong with this character.

How satisfied are you with the Monk? 1-10

[:1]Well, we've been waiting a long long tiem for the announcment of the 4th char.

With the fact that we already had full Melee, full Spellcaster and one jungle hobo, and confident speculation of a Ranger class, there was a big question concerning the last 5th char.

Now, although the Monk was announce suprisingly as the 4th char and not the 5th, how satisfied are you from his as a char, and probably the spot filler of the "Wild Card 5th char"?

1-10

(10 being the highest.. LOL ^^)

Go |||10... the Monk is awesome|||Mmm, I'll say 5. Not terribly excited, but not too disappointed either.|||3 here.

He had to be Asian since the Pal is Black! ^_-

P.S.: For those who haven't seen him yet , sparing them Google-ing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFGXKV_45HQ.|||I'll give a tentative 7.

The Monk is what I predicted, and he looks really cool. I'm skeptical though, as his combo system may be a little too complex for what I want in a Diablo game.

I guess I'll just have to wait and play him to know for sure though |||10/10 I really wanted a melee class that relied on speed and was surprised that my wish came true.|||10/10. Gameplay-wise, he looks exactly like my kind of character, and he looks badass. I bet his beard has accomplished more than most monarchs of civilizations past.|||9. Wanted a quick & fast melee character and seems like this one might be it. Dunno about the combo system though. Everytime I see combo sequencing requirements, it always just seems to limit the way a char can be played. Hopeif it sticks, the monk's combat play will feel more open ended than just hit off combo 1 then combo 2 etc.|||8/10

He loses a point for the future problem of looking silly in heavy armor. Really, anything higher than splint mail will not make any sense at all.

Another point comes off for a combination of things: we already have melee info and lots of it; an archer class would have been more satisfying to the fans. We have only a few of his skills known and no idea what the trees are. And most of all, the trailer video has very poor animation and obvious polygons with little detail. A good idea and look for a Diablo class, but poor presentation. Not sure if moving faster than the eye can follow is a good thing; it's hard to tell what he's really doing. It's even harder to see what's going on with all the light effects from his attacks. It would have been nice to see him with different weapons than the obvious choice of staff or claws. Still a good addition though.|||10 from me. Wanted a Monk but didn't think we would get one, and it even has a cool combo system as a plus.

Question for those who played Monk in demo...

[:1]For those of us who have no love for fist weapons, what were his staff attack animations like? In all the vids I've seen with the Monk using a staff, it seemed like he didn't really use it or swing it around much.

Monk gameplay in the Artisans Trailer - Page 2

[:1]Function over fashion in my book |||i always liked the no-helmet options in the mmo games. wish they all had it|||At first when i watched that last ending i was confused which class it really was because of the armor but it looks pretty nice combat wise.|||Quote:

i think the biggest news in that video is that they made the awful "make the monsters totally transparent, so they just look like red a shape surrounded by thick red lines" effect much less annoying.

In the new video you can even see the model of the monster you fight

They said that it looks like that in the video because the UI is hidden. The red outline is in the game.

As for the helmet, he is wearing one, and it shows on the character. It's just very subtle. Looks like a...well...tiara.

|||then its not a helmet is it its just a bad excuse for a remake of the 80:s sweatband:

utterly useless as a helmet in other words.

As for the red outline if it is still present in the game when its launched the first thing i will do is to find a way to remove it from the game.|||Circlets have their own purpose, but defense definitely wasn't it.|||Quote:

At first when i watched that last ending i was confused which class it really was because of the armor but it looks pretty nice combat wise.

I agree that it looks nice indeed. Too bad it wont look as nice when the monk actually uses his skills, which is all the time. Man I will never stop wishing for a complete removal of the horiffic skills Exploding Palm and Seven Sided Strike. I might forbid any player to use those skills in my games. I'm quite serious.

Monk gameplay in the Artisans Trailer

[:1]At the end of the video, we see the monk fighting against some goatmen, and I'm not quite sure about this, but it looks like the monk attacks sometimes with kicks instead of punches. Am I seeing this right?

If I'm seeing things right, I think it does give the monk's attacks a certain fluidity, and feels much more kung-fu style than it did at Blizzcon 2009. What do you guys think? Does it add or detract from the monk's visual style?|||From what I can see, he uses different types of punches, but he always uses his arms.|||Quote:

From what I can see, he uses different types of punches, but he alwaysuses his arms.

Now that I'm watching it again, I think you're right. It's just that he twists his body and moves his right leg forward, out of view from the camera, but he's actually just giving an uppercut-like punch. Oh well, it still looks more fluid than the Blizzcon 2009 version. |||Yeah, I saw that to. It looks like a roundhouse backfist punch. I'm unsure if it is called that way.|||That is the conclusion I came to as well, that it was some sort of uppercut type punch. I think it looks good-it is very fast. This is the first time we have seen him using a weapon to attack as opposed to just his hands.

I wonder if that was his regular attack animation or if what we were seeing was one of his skills or both. A few times the screen shakes a little bit which I would assume would either be from some type of skill or perhaps a critical strike.|||I noticed that when you see the Monk's inventory he has a helmet shown. The character however doesn't seems to be wearing any headgear.|||I hope they made helmets with an non-appearance or invisible function since most helmets are gawdfull ugly and I prefer to see my toons head!

Headbands and crowns should also be visualized as such!|||He uses punches with his Fist weapons, and he never does any combos or special moves, presumably since his Spirit resource was removed from that build. That's why nothing shows in his mana bulb during the NPC conversation, or during the little fight at the end. Clearly Bliz wants to give us no previews of the resource, pre-blizzcon.|||i think the biggest news in that video is that they made the awful "make the monsters totally transparent, so they just look like red a shape surrounded by thick red lines" effect much less annoying.

Monk's Beard - Page 10

[:1]Quote:

wow i didint say bald made people wise i was saying that baldness is a sign of wisdom in alots more culture then beard ever was god learn to read

also you find it good looking other dont...personally i dont really like the hobbo look

and young people as you say have a flawed image of monk that were probly influenced on you by american simplistic view of most thing

and in reality chinese never had monk they were a cast of people that introduced Buddhism to their culture that came with the monk way the shaolin way is actually a balance of the body and not of combat they never really fought in any war like samurai and such but actually influenced more aggresive method to open up in the way of fighting, shaolin are supposed to spread the way of buddhism and if you know buddhism its not a warrior religion...far from that

and the fact that people think shaolin is the birth of martial art is far from true

also i suggest you either go back to school or go in a country that will actually teach you the real stuff and actually give you an education that wont make you look like a total r%#*rd

and you shouldnt trust google for such important information the internet turned into a big piece of crap if you didint notice...its not all bad but yes there is some stuff that are actually a bunch of lie and misconception also the official shaolin robe is brown with yellow or orange belt from what i remember from my studie in chinese history

the robe you see in diablo is actually a tibet monk robe....which is only occupied and corrupted by the chinese nation...i could show some graphic pic but these are kind of easy to find so...oh and if interested in some nice little history look how they drain resource and corrupt the land and give none to the people there...maybe you could gain knowledge out of that and about how corrupted our stupid race is and how the protector the almighty american are still getting rich instead of keeping the peace and giving back the right these people have...i know not surprising but most think the chinese are the only bad influence there lol

then again why should they have their country if they wont even fight for it and only think peace lead to anything...when most dont care about them and their "spiritual leader" the llama is out there trying to get help and relaxing...errr wow

but enought politic the point is he look stupid and more like an hobo then a monk...even monk or anyone should take care of their beard...f&^K im sorry but it look dirty lol yuk

Actually, you're completely wrong. Martial arts derived from bodhidharma, who originally designed a series of movements as a form of exercise, that doubled as self defense training to protect the temples from warlords and bandits. It is the origin of both gung fu, and tai chi, which are two of the oldest martial arts, of which all of the eastern fighting styles descend from.

The design of the monk in D3 is based off him, as bodhidarmha, one of the founders and prophets of buddhism was both bald and had a beard exactly like the monk in this game. As a monk, the last thing you'd be concerned with is a little facial hair because you live up in a secluded mountain.

Also, the monk's design in D3 touches upon the european monk as well, who left his beard as a testament to god.

"The significance of the Nazarene vow was a sign of God's power resting on the person who made it. To cut off the hair meant to cut off God's power as in the example of Samson (see Judges 16:17-19)".

In a sense, the fact that you call him a hobo is a complete disrespect to the monks of old, as many throughout the world predominantly had beards. Insulting the US only proves how ignorant the points you make are, and how little research you have done on the subject. The point of a monk's teaching isn't about looking nice, it's about finding enlightenment within oneself, or fulfillment. The beard just underscores this point, and shows the age and wisdom of the monk.

So ya, unless you have an intelligent statement to say, don't spew inaccurate nonsense thanks.|||He doesn't have a chin under that beard, he has another fist.

[:1]The Norris has a beard, the Monk has a beard, coincidence? I think not. Seriously though if its that much of a problem for you play female.

There is no way to photoshop that monster away. Tried a few times, but nothing human(oid) remains.

And to remain in the style of this thread:

When the monk does push ups, he isn't pushing himself up, he's pushing Sanctuary down.

I don't like beards. Hope the female monk won't have one.|||I think this guy was their inspiration for the Monk:

http://mrldust.files.wordpress.com/2...or-of-cool.jpg|||The problem as I see it is this.

1) He meticulously shaves his head, chest, arms and even pits.

2) The beard is not carefully cut or trimmed at all BUT it's trimmed at least a little but very "unmeticulous".

So why the two extremes, it makes no sense.

It almost looks like he's just been on the road a long time but had to cut gum out of the mustache part but at the SAME TIME spend hours shaving everything else.

I like beards and everything but I think the way it's presented is a little weird.|||Quote:

I was going to tell not all the monks are bald and shaved but only budhists;then I realised that the concept of a FIGHTING monk is indeed taken from the budhists fighter monks.

Well, it's a monk taken from a Chinese Martial Fighter novel, simple as that. There are more than plenty of those running around.

Monk's Beard - Page 4

[:1]In Diablo II I hate the Barbarian's stupid little ponytail. It's just small and puny looking. So what do I do? I put on Arreat's like everyone else and he looks sweet!

I'm sure you can (and will want to, since the game is about gear) put on a helmet that will cover up the beard.

Or you can play female. Or another class. Wow, the possibilities are endless!

But yes, I'm also not a huge fan of the beard... but not worried by it. As I said, plenty of options.|||Quote:

p.s. He looks like a mountain hermit. Win!|||He doesn't think that shaving is something necessary, after all it grows naturally and obstructing its grow is obstructing nature.

Well, it's either that or that Blizzard wanted to make him the only character that could pick philosophy as a career, and beards for such people surely do work.

Yay for the non-stereotypical monk, the one monk of Diablo 3!|||I like the artwork for him and the design of 'Old fashioned Eastern European meets Asian Monk'. Perhaps as they said they looked at fighting games for inspiration they didnt want him too look at an obvious clone of the Virtua Fighter 5 character.|||He's partially based on eastern European culture, so culturally speaking his beard makes sense. Also, 1) this is Diablo, and 2) this isn't a Korean MMORPG, therefore as few classes as possible should look like Zac Efron.|||If you've never met a muscular dude with a shaved head and a full beard, then you're just not going to be able to comprehend the manliness and intimidation level that such a look brings to the table. He looks like someone who couldn't decide between Dhalsim and Zangief, so he just combined the two looks. No complaints here.|||The beard makes him look like Grigori Rasputin.

Besides, I hear that under his beard there isn't a chin but only another fist!

Just like Chuck Norris.

(I hope everyone caught the reference)

Chuck Norris...|||Don't know if i'll be rolling a monk first up but damn, they did an excellent job on the look. 99% perfect (beard could be half an inch longer).

Easily the best looking character so far.

Eastern European influence.... genius.|||What annoys me THE MOST is that we shouldn't even be discussing this, if Blizzard had let us customize the characters looks. Hell every new RPG features this, Diablo III disappointed me in this aspect.

The beard looks pretty stupid, yes.

Look at games like Guild Wars, try creating a Monk there and see how many options you got - male, female, any hair/skin color/height. The customization options rock, and I am almost looking forward more for Guild Wars 2 than Diablo III now.

*still waiting for a bow based class*

Diablo has no customization because the classes really aren't classes, they're real persons in the game world. It's pretty much five people you can pick from, not five career paths.|||YES!

I hate his beard with my life! It just looks SO stupid!

I actually dislike his whole design. He's a monk. Strip him down without all of these tons of dresses and make him clean, shaved and bald.

Probably the reason why Blizzard gave the monk a beard is to show his maturity and wisdom, like what we see in chinese martial art shows. It is always the highest ranking monks who have beards.|||Quote:

Where did you get this info from, its completely opposite of what was stated in the official website.

[BLUE]As any informed student of the peoples and cultures of this world must also realize, this man was one of the monks of Ivgorod, the secretive and reclusive holy warriors of the country.

...

He went on to describe his intense mental and physical training, his unending quest to hone his mind and body into an instrument of divine justice. Though I do wonder for what need his thousand gods would require a mortal man to implement their will. When I asked him why he did not carry a sword or, indeed, any weapon at all, he simply replied, "My body is my weapon." Then raising his hand and tapping his forehead, he added, "As is my mind."[/BLUE]

Generally I think Blizzard tied the beard to his abilities, I doubt a clean shaven young monk would have the ability to assert such powerful skills. And that would leave a wrong impression to the players. Just like the barbarian.|||Quote:

Hehehe, I know. My comment was a little tongue-in-cheek, inspired by the way the Monk trailer played out and basing it a bit on the comment I quoted. Sorry for not making that clearer.

It can create some interesting possibilities to be sure - would be fun if a Monk can use magic staves of the kind the Wizard could use, but derive different benefits from them. Versatility can be a very good thing if kept balanced.

In lieu of my unclear comment above, I personally prefer a fist/claw using Monk (I always did prefer sharp metal weapons in games where the object is to kill), but that doesn't mean I'm averse to a melee class using staves; I know there are people with vastly different tastes from myself and I'm certainly not so shallow as to think the world revolves around me either (at least not while I'm level-headed).

Monk, D3's Assassin? - Page 2

[:1]Yes he is. All we need now is a weapon than gives him WW and some armor that grants teleport, and we're all set. |||Quote:

The 3rd shot of crippling wave sort of looks like a spin, and even slows.

Hundred fist - cripple = the new tele ww? :O

hmmm |||Heh..based on what we have seen i doubt even teleport would help much. |||Quote:

Too early to really know dude, but I like where your head's at. My first thought was actually Exploding Palm - Run away and spam cripple like a coward for 7 seconds - repeat (skill based OW? Yes please), but I like your idea better. My main concern is with how the combo system will work in PvP- it will certainly be better that D2 (the 1st and 2nd hits do more than regular attacks), but how much better remains to be seen. The tragic part of the D2 assassin was that her buffs and passives made for a really cool melee fighter but her actual attacks sucked - thus the kicker (kicks themselves weren't even that good in PvP) and later the WWsin. The Monk seems like he has good attacks, hopefully his passives will be interesting as well. A lot of it will come down to mobility - the Monk is fast, but with teleporting Wizards and charging/WWing barbs those charges might be hard to put together. Which will be great! High skill, big reward, that how I like my PvPers anyway.|||Quote:

I can't wait for a bigger list to figure out how best to combo. So far, maybe drain from exploding palm, cripple to slow and drain, and idk what else :P

This dude is so exciting! I can't wait to get into the Monk builds |||Btw, was i the only one who thought that the monk trailer was kinda.. cheap? I'm not talking graphics.

lol.|||I must admit that I fail to understand martial arts was solely the purview of the assassin in D2 though. |||Quote:

As soon as they reveal the Monks trap-skills, it will all fall into place. |||Quote:

He's not a trapper, Blizzard mentioned he/she's actually a holy+martial class, so what we're missing are the holy skills. I'm really curious to see them...

Hmmms I have a speculation, maybe he/she could turn into some Buddha-like avatar or something

Come to think of it, this actually fits very well into the D3 scenario actually, imagine a glowing avatar of God tramping and smashing his way through the dark dungeons and creepy gigantic monsters...epic.

I think Blizzard was trying to keep things hush-hush when making these videos, they have already revealed two Bosses for the previous class intro videos.

Can't wait for the last class |||I still think though that video was really lame tho. Its a matrix/anime kinda thingy.

imo, ofc.
