You could do some really fun Massacre bonus stuff with the aid of a high hps, low dmg Templar. Just keep herding monsters in, get them to bunch around your merc, and tap a bunch of Exploding Palms on the attackers. Then, when something finally dies, you get an enormous chain reaction of blood novas.
I think the templar could actually be pretty useful. The monk won't really need him (at least not in normal, though that's true of all classes/followers in Blizzard's bizarre implementation of the system) but a tank would be helpful in that lots of the monsters would cluster around the tank, thus letting the Monk pick and choose his targets.
