What'll matter the most will be gear, player skill and of course, team work.
I find speculation threads like this one to be strange. Much of the stuff we know is likely to change, and not everything has been seen yet. So how are we to make a call? Watch melee Wizards take on both of them with ease!

The Monk is the weaver--he moves in and out of combat, and is similarly tied to his necessity to engage to function. While not absolutely fragile, he leans toward the dodge style of damage avoidance. Attacks suggest speed focus, which will help with retreating and timed engagement.
This translates to different levels of char control. Barbs will be a beast when they get a hold of you, and the quick dispatching suggests high DPS. Monks are about quantity and effects based on the hits (slow, bleed, stun via lightning, etc). Devastating in their own right.
